Capello reviews the current England Squad
Franco celebrating victory 1939
It seems England could not have chosen a more politically questionable manager than Fabio Capello. Not only is he tactically conservative on the pitch, he's also an unashamed fascist sympathiser off it. Capello's father was active in the Italian military in Croatia during WWII. The Sun (never ones to shy from controversy) managed to turn this into a positive, as Capello snr. was banished to a concentration camp by the Nazis following Italy's withdrawl from the war in 1943. Amazingly, being sent to a concentration camp does not mean that an individual is innocent of war crimes. Putting an Italian officer that fought for a fascist regime on a par with Jewish victims of the holocaust is a joke to say the least. That seemed to be lost on the well educated patrons of Murdoch's right wing flag ship. Or maybe it wasn't.
In any case, it only seems to have encouraged Capello jnr. Not only has he displayed an affection for Spain's Dictator Francisco Franco, he's also been a member of Forza Italia and Lega Nord. Franco 'left a legacy of order. In Spain everything works well, there is education, cleanliness, respect'. Little comfort for the 300,000 executed by Franco after his assumption of power in 1939. Can you imagine if Capello publicly admired Hitler? Of course The Sun has probably found it's own fascist hero.
